Program Description

Caring for the Older Adults II is a series of six audio/slide modules designed to target all health professionals in the nursing home, hospital, clinic, and home health care environments. This program was produced and distributed by the University of Florida Geriatric Education Center (GEC), in cooperation with the North Florida Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) and the Gainesville VA Medical Center Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), Spring 2002.

General Instructions

Instructions

Please follow these easy steps to earn your continuing education credit:

1. View synchronized slides and listen to each module

a. Click on Program Modules
b. Click on the first talk of Module 1
c. To view automated, synchronized slide/audio, click on the Real Audio icon next to the slide number.
d. To view slides only, without sound, click on the underlined title of the first slide. Thereafter, press "next" or "previous" to go forward or back.

2. Read and review all supplemental material

3. Complete and submit the posttest for that module.

a. From the Program Modules page, go to the appropriate module and click on " Posttest and Evaluation for Module (#)" to take the posttest.

b. At end of posttest, type name as it should appear on the certificate and submit.

c. The posttest is self-grading and results will appear. If you pass the posttest with a grade of 70% or better, the program will prompt you to continue on to the evaluation.

d. Press "Proceed to Certificate" and complete all questions on the evaluation.

e. Window containing Certificate will appear. Print copy of certificate. Please note that once you have left the certificate screen, certificate will no longer be accessible and no other certificate or proof of completion can be provided.

f. Close Certificate window.

g. Click on "coa2" at top left hand of evaluation form.

Note: If you do not pass the posttest with a grade of 70% or better, you will not be permitted to proceed to the evaluation and you must redo Steps 1-3.

Verification of CME/CEU

Please be sure you have printed your certificate upon completion of program as instructed in Step 3e above... certificate page will no longer be accessible and no other certificate or proof of credit can be provided.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Education (CEU) Credit

Available Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Education (CE) Credit
This program was originally released in May, 2002 and is accredited through May 15, 2004. Available continuing education credit will be provided as follows:

 

 

Continuing Medical Education (CME) - Category 1 credit will be issued to physicians and physician assistants.

Accreditation: The University of Florida College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Florida College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6 hours in category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.

Nursing Continuing Education Credit - Nursing Continuing Education will be provided by the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System. The North Florida/South Georgia Veterans system is an approved provider of continuing education in the State of Florida (provider number 2285). This program meets the requirements of the Florida Board of Nursing for 6 contact hours of continuing education.

Social Worker Continuing Education Credit - Continuing education credit for social workers will be provided by The University of Florida College of Medicine. The Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling has approved this program for 6 hours of credit. (Provider #BAP 429, expires 03/03) Each participant should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) -- Disciplines, including nursing, not specifically covered above or not indicated by the participant on the evaluation form will be issued general continuing education units. Participants are responsible for contacting the provider in their discipline in order to receive specific continuing education credit.

The University of Florida is accredited by the American Council on Continuing Education and designates this activity for .60 Continuing Education Credit Units (CEU).

Each participant should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.

Criteria for Qualifying and Applying for Continuing Medical Education (CME) or General Continuing Education (CE) Credit

CME/CE credit will be awarded for each individual module completed. Each audio module and accompanying material will constitute one "contact or credit hour" toward awarding of CME or CE.

Each module contains approximately 40-45 minutes of qualifying educational material. Accompanying each module is reading material relevant to the particular module representing approximately 15 minutes of qualifying educational material.

Each module will be accompanied by a posttest and evaluation form on content, speakers, format, and overall quality. This evaluation also requests information required for our records as well as your recommendations for future topics.

At the conclusion of each module's posttest and evaluation, a certificate will be issued through the system.

 

 

Completion of Posttest and Evaluation

In order to receive credit for each individual module, the posttest for each module must be completed, and the participant must achieve a grade of at least 70.

Once the posttest has been successfully completed, the program will take the participant directly to the evaluation form. In order to receive credit for each individual module, the evaluation for that program module must be electronically submitted, and license number and discipline must be indicated.

Supplemental Materials to be used with Modules

The accompanying handout material of approximately 15 minutes of supplemental reading and study is part of and is to be used in conjunction with the program audio modules in order to qualify as a completed program. Questions pertaining to the handout materials will be included in the posttest.

Speaker Confict of Interest

It is the policy of the University of Florida Office of Continuing Medical Education to insure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor in all its individually sponsored or jointly sponsored educational programs. All faculty participating in any University of Florida sponsored programs, are expected to disclose to the program audience any real or apparent conflict(s) of interest that may have a direct bearing on the subject matter of the continuing education program. This pertains to relationships with pharmaceutical companies, biomedical device manufacturers, or other corporations whose products or services are related to the subject matter of the presentation topic.

The intent of this policy is not to prevent a speaker with a potential conflict of interest from making a presentation. It is merely intended that any potential conflict should be identified openly so that the listeners may form their own judgments about the presentation with the full disclosure of the facts. It remains for the audience to determine whether the speaker's outside interests may reflect a possible bias in either the exposition or the conclusions presented.
