Description
of Program
Health Management for Older Adults is
a series of six audiocassette tapes designed to target health professionals
in the nursing home, hospital, clinic, and home health care environments.
This program was produced and distributed by the University of Florida
Geriatric Education Center (GEC), in cooperation with the North Florida
Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) and the Gainesville VA Medical
Center Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), Spring,
1999.
Objectives
The following objectives are addressed
for each of the six tapes in the series. Upon completion of the program,
the participant will be able to:

1 - Drug Effects on the Elderly
Identify
and prevent common drug interactions/reactions
Assess
and correct patient polypharmacy
Recognize
and treat chronic pain
TAPE 2
- Falls & Fractures
Understand
and avoid "deconditioning" and its effects on the elderly
Discuss
risk factors for falls and interventions to minimize falls in the
elderly
Recognize
risk factors of osteoporosis and prevent related fractures
TAPE 3
- Caring for the Caregiver
Instruct
caregivers in "caring for themselves"
Identify
and resolve "catastrophic reactions" in patients
Recognize
"caregiver stress" and advise caregivers on handling their loneliness,
anger and depression
TAPE 4
- Dehydration & Nutrition
Recognize
risk factors/symptoms and treat dehydration
Manage
nutritional needs of the elderly
Assess
patient oral health and direct patient for treatment
TAPE 5
- Sensory Changes
Identify
symptoms of hearing loss and possible solutions
Understand
and identify vision changes in the elderly
Understand
the physiology of diabetic retinopathy and recommended treatment
TAPE 6
- Just Old, Not Dead
Recognize
and understand social isolation and loneliness in the elderly
Understand
and deal more sensitively with sexuality and the need for
intimacy in the elderly
Counsel
patients on "successful" aging

B. Multi-User Instructions
The Health Management for Older Adults
audiocassette program is designed for both individual use in a home-study
environment and multi-user application in a classroom setting. In
order to accommodate issuance of continuing medical education and
continuing education credit or Certificates of Completion, please
use the original copy of the posttest and evaluation to reproduce
as many copies as needed for program participants. In the event the
original posttest and evaluation are used, lost or destroyed, please
call the AHEC office nearest you to request another original.
C. Accreditation
Accreditation
for Continuing Education for Health Management for Older Adults II
has expired and continuing education credit can no longer be issued
for this program.
However, once
the posttest and evaluations have been completed and submitted successfully,
a Certificate of Completion will be issued and may be printed for
your records.
Completion
of Posttest
In order to receive credit for each individual
segment, the posttest for that program segment must be completed and
submitted along with the evaluation, and the participant must achieve
a grade of at least 80% (or 12 correct answers).
Completion
of Evaluation
In order to receive credit for each individual
segment, the evaluation for that program segment must be completed and
submitted with the corresponding posttest.

part of and is to be used in conjunction with the program in order to
qualify as a completed program. This supplemental material is accessible
