Drug Interactions

Thomas G. Baumgartner, Pharm.D., M.Ed 

Dr. Baumgartner serves in the College of Pharmacy as Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Nutrition Support Consult Services at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. In addition, he is Clinical Professor in the Colleges of Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. 

Dr. Baumgartner is also a Registered Pharmacist in the States of New York, New Jersey and Florida and is a Licensed Consultant Pharmacist. He is a Board Certified Nutrition Support Pharmacist, a certified teacher in the State of Florida, a certified CPR instructor, and is a certified instructor with the American Red Cross in First Aid and Vital Signs. 

Dr. Baumgartner earned his M.Ed. at Stetson University, Deland, FL, with a 4.0 average and graduated Cum Laude from the University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA with a Pharm.D. He is a Scientific Advisor of the American Council on Science and Health, member of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, member of the American Society for the Advancement of Science, member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, and member of the American Society of Nutritional Support Services, Inc., where he has served in a number of positions including Board of Directors, Publication Committee Chairman, and President. 
 
 

 

 

Polypharmacy 

George J. Caranasos, M.D.

Dr. Caranasos is presently Director of the Geriatric Education Center and Ruth S. Jewett Professor of Medicine in Geriatrics, University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, FL. In addition, he served until recently as Chief of the Internal Medicine Division, College of Medicine for 23 years.

Dr. Caranasos earned his M.D. at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD; completed his internship and served as Assistant Resident at Osler Medical Services, Johns Hopkins Hospital; and was Research Associate at the Johns Hopkins University for Medical Research and Training. He served as Chief Resident, Department of Medicine, Shands Teaching Hospital, University of Florida and Gainesville Veterans Affairs Hospital, Gainesville, FL, and was a Fellow, Psychosomatic Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, University of Florida. 

Dr. Caranasos is a Diplomate with the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, member of the Society of General Internal Medicine, member of the Southern Medical Association, member of the Florida Medical Association, member of the Johns Hopkins medical and Surgical Association, member of the American Geriatrics Society, member of the Gerontological Society of America, member of the Florida Council on Aging, and the National Council on Aging. 


 

 


 


Chronic Pain Management

Charles P. Broderick, Ph.D.

Dr. Broderick is currently the Geropsychology Post-Doctoral Fellow with the North Florida/South Georgia Veteran's Healthcare Network at the Gainesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Gainesville, FL. 

He became interested in working with the elderly after working with patients who suffered early cognitive and physical loss. His teaching activity has included training of medical residents, nurses, and other health care professionals in psychological approaches to treating patients; supervision of interns; preventative medicine educational classes for overweight and hypertensive patients; training of nurses, social workers, occupational and physical therapists in behavioral management of elderly and demented patients; taught preventative medicine classes in stress management to cardiac rehabilitation patients and taught behavioral management of dementia to caregivers. 

Dr. Broderick received a B.A. in mathematics at Notre Dame and went on to earn an M.A. in psychology from Pepperdine University and his Ph.D. from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Broderick served his internship at Western New York VA Health Network, Buffalo, NY, specializing in Geropsychology/ Interdisciplinary Training Team Program.

Mary Conlin Shaw, Ph.D., ARNP, CS.

Dr. Shaw is currently Associate Director of Education/Evaluation with the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) and Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, and Courtesy Associate in Medicine, Department of Medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, FL. 

Dr. Shaw graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Honors Program at the Boston College School of Nursing, Chestnut Hill, MA, earned her Masters in Gerontological Nursing, and her Ph.D. from the University of Florida College of Nursing, where she also received the Academic Excellence Award. 

Dr. Shaw is certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner, a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner and received a Certificate in Gerontology from the University of Florida. She is a member of the Gerontological Society of America, the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, the Florida Council on Aging, and Sigma Thea Tau International.

John R. Meuleman, M.D. 

Dr. Meuleman is presently Associate Professor in the Division of Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, and Associate Chairman for Education, Department of Medicine at the University of Florida, as well as Associate Director, Clinical Affairs, Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, Gainesville, FL.

Dr. Meuleman graduated with his B.S. (Highest Honors) from the University of Notre Dame and earned his M.D. at the Washington University Medical School. He completed his residency and served as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Florida (Shands Teaching Hospital and VA Medical Center). He also is a Diplomate in Geriatric Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Meuleman, who is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and licensed in the State of Florida, is a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine, a member of the American Geriatric Association, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. 
 
 

 


   

Fall Assessment and Prevention 

Melody J. Marshall, Ph.D., ARNP 

Dr. Marshall presently serves as Associate Professor in the College of Nursing, University of Florida, and Associate Faculty for the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center, VA Medical Center, Gainesville, FL. She is a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner with experience in nursing homes, and her research has included quality of care in nursing homes, quality of life for seniors and Alzheimer's Disease.Dr. Marshall has served as a consultant to home care agencies and nursing homes and was developer and director of the three-year UF-Geriatric Education Center's long-term care nursing staff development project. 

Dr. Marshall graduated from the Medical College of Virginia with a BSN in Nursing, from the University of Oklahoma with an MS in Preventative Medicine & Public Health and her Ph.D. in Human Ecology, and received her Post-Master's from the University of Florida as a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. 

She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Altrusa House of Gainesville, Inc., on the Mid-Florida Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council and on the Board of Directors for DARE (Dedicated Alternative Resources for the Elderly, Inc.) and the Coordinating Committee for the UF Geriatric Education Center. She is active as Chair or Member of several Doctoral and Master's candidates' Supervisory Committees.

Leilani Doty, Ph.D. 

Dr. Doty is currently Faculty Associate for the Center for Research on Women's Health; The Brain Institute, the Center for Neuropsychological Studies and the Center for Gerontological Studies/Institute for Gerontology at the University of Florida; and the Geriatric Research, Education & Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center. In addition she is the Administrator of the Memory Disorder Clinic, Department of Neurology, University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, FL. 

Dr. Doty earned her B.A. in Psychology and her Ph.D. in Counselor Education with Specialty in Gerontology at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. Dr. Doty served a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Gerontological Society of America. She is certified as a Counselor from the American Association of Counseling & Developing, Washington, DC, holds a Certificate of Gerontology from the Center for Gerontological Studies and is certified as a registered nurse from Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, Boston, MA. 

Dr. Doty received the University of Florida Women of Achievement Award, the Outstanding Service Award as President, College of Medicine Women Faculty Association at the University of Florida and a nominee for the Excellence in Aging with Dignity Award for a Health Care Professional, Florida Commission on Aging with Dignity. She is a former member of the University of Florida Senate Steering Committee; a founding member of the Alliance for Women's Health and Research; a member of the Eastside Advisory Council, Community Health Center at Eastside; a member of the University of Florida Status of Women Committee; a member of the Executive Committee, Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research; and Grants Coordinator for the Altrusa House Project committee.

Michael J. Tueth, M.D. 

Dr. Tueth presently serves as Associate Professor of Psychiatry with the College of Medicine, University of Florida. In addition, he is the Attending Inpatient Psychiatrist, attending Psychiatrist in the mental Health Clinic, Psychiatric Consultant for the Memory Disorder Clinic, Director of Electroconvulsive Therapy and Associate Faculty with the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center, at the VA Medical Center, Gainesville, FL.

He is also Director of the Geropsychiatry Outpatient Clinic at Shands Hospital, Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship, and coordinator of the PGY-1 resident training. Dr. Tueth also serves as Consultant at Northeast Florida State Hospital nursing care units and as Director, Long Term Care for Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at three local nursing care units. 

Dr. Tueth received his M.D. at the University of Illinois and completed his residencies at the University of Louisville and the University of Florida. He is Diplomate with the American Board of Emergency Medicine, Diplomate with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and Diplomate in Psychiatry with added qualifications in Geriatric Psychiatry. 

Dr. Tueth is a member of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry and is licensed in both Georgia and Florida, with inactive licenses in Minnesota, Kentucky and Indiana.
 

 

 


 
 

Caregiver Loneliness, Anger, & Depression 

Judith M. deMontmollin, Ph.D. 

Dr. deMontmollin is a Staff Psychologist at the VA Medical Center, Gainesville and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.

She received both her M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychiatry from the University of Florida and completed her internship in Clinical Psychiatry at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr. deMontmollin serves as a member of the Education Committee and frequent lecturer for the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the VA Medical Center, and Coordinating Committee member of the Geriatric Education Center, College of Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.

Dr. deMontmollin has made numerous presentations on geriatric depression and dementia, and she participated in a five-part workshop sponsored by the University of Florida Department of Psychiatry and the Governor's Initiative on Alzheimer's Disease: What's New in Managing Dementia. She also participated in the Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS) workshop to train HRS workers to cope with problems of clients in nursing homes.

Early Detection and Intervention of Dehydration 

Nannette Hoffman, M.D. 

Dr. Hoffman is presently Medical Director of the Nursing Home Care Unit and of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the VA Medical Center, as well as serving as a Clinical Assistant Professor for the College of Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. Dr. Hoffman received her B.S., Magna Cum Laude, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her M.D. from Albany Medical College, Albany, NY. She completed her internship/residency at the Shands Hospital and Clinics, University of Florida, and the VA Medical Center, Gainesville, FL. 

She is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, and is Board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. Dr. Hoffman is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Geriatrics Society. She currently serves as a member of the VA Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, the VA Library Committee, the VA Extended Care Advisory Council, the VA Medical Center Infection Control committee and Chairs the VA Clinical Investigation Subcommittee, the VA Ethics Committee and the VA Drug Utilization and Evaluation Committee.

Patricia Gregory, M.A., R.D. 

Ms. Gregory is a Clinical Dietitian at the Weight Management Clinic and for Oncology. She is certified as a Lifestyle Counselor for Weight Loss and Stress Management. In addition she participates quarterly in third year Medical Student curriculum and is Co-Investigator for WINS (women's Intervention Nutrition Study) at Shands Hospital. 

Ms. Gregory earned her B.A. at Gorden College in Wenham, MA and her M.A. in Human Nutrition at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY.
 

 

 

 


 
 

Assessing Oral Health 

Teresa A. Dolan, D.D.S, M.P.H. 

Dr. Dolan currently serves as Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Dentistry, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. She also directs the pre-doctoral curriculum in geriatric dentistry, which includes didactic instruction and previously directed the Geriatric Dentistry Fellowship Program. She has done extensive research in the area of Geriatric Oral Health and Assessment.

Dr. Dolan earned her B.A. in Zoology from Rutgers University, a General Practice Residency certificate from Long Island Jewish Medical Center, her M.P.H. from University of California, Los Angeles and her D.D.S. from the University of Texas. She also holds certificates in General Practice Residency from the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, in Geriatric Dentistry Fellowship from the Veterans Administration, and a Dental Public Health Residency from the University of Florida. In addition she is a Diplomate with the American Board of Dental Public Health.

Dr. Dolan serves on the Board of Directors of the Acorn Clinic, Brooker, FL, and is a member of the American Association of Dental Schools, member of the International Association of Dental Research, member of the American Dental Association, member of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, member of the Florida Public Health Association, member of the Florida Council on Aging, and member of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry.

Alice Holmes, Ph.D. 

Dr. Holmes is presently Associate Professor, Audiology, Department of Communicative Disorders, University of Florida. Her professional certifications include a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Certified Audiologist for the Pennsylvania Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, Idaho Teaching Certificate for the auditorially impaired at all levels, Texas Teaching Certificate for the deaf/hard-of-hearing at all levels, and she is a licensed Audiologist in the State of Florida. 

Dr. Holmes earned her B.S. in Ed. in Deaf Education at Texas Tech University, her M.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Idaho State University and her Ph.D. in Communicative Disorders from Pennsylvania State University. She was recipient of the Teaching Excellence in the Field of Aging Award, and is an invited member of the International Collegium of Rehabilitative Audiology.

James William Doyle, M.D., Ph.D. 

Dr. Doyle is currently Associate Professor, Glaucoma, with the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Florida College of Medicine and is Medical Director of the Eye Clinic at Shands Hospital, Gainesville, FL.

He serves as a member of the Medical Staff Monitor Sub-Committee at Shands Hospital; is Quality Assurance Liaison, Department of Ophthalmology; member of the Resident Applicant Interview Committee, University of Florida; Quality Assurance Liaison, Division of Ophthalmology at the Gainesville Veteran's Affairs Medical Center; member of the Instructional Advisory Committee, American Academy of Ophthalmology; Liaison of the Managed Care Committee, University of Florida; member of the University Physicians Billing Committee, University of Florida; member of the Budget Committee, Department of Ophthalmology; Medical Student Advisory Committee, College of Medicine; Medical Records Advisory Committee, University of Florida; Director of Medical Student Ophthalmology Course, College of Medicine; and member of the Verbal Orders Task Force, Medical Records, University of Florida. 

Dr. Doyle received his B.A. with distinction from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and his M.D. from the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, FL. He served a Fellowship and his Residency in Glaucoma at the University of Florida, his internship at Lloyd Nolan Hospital in Fairfield, AL, and completed his post-doctorate work in Gastroenterology at the University of Florida.

Dr. Doyle is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Alachua County Medical Society and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology.

Laurence Kennedy, M.D. 

Dr. Kennedy is Associate Professor, Endocrine Division, College of Medicine, and Director of Internal Medicine with the Diabetes Center of Excellence, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. Prior to UF, he served as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. 

Dr. Kennedy received his M.D. at the Queen's University in Belfast, Ireland. He also has participated in research studies in the areas of endocrinology and diabetes, as well as clinical trials of various treatments and medications, and has authored numerous publications on this research. 

He is a member of the Medical and Scientific Section of the British Diabetic Association, member of the Irish Endocrine Society, member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, member of the Endocrine Society, member of the Society for Endocrinology, elected member of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland, and member of the American Diabetes Association.

Karolyn L. Godbey, Ph.D. 

Dr. Godbey is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Care Environments and Systems in the College of Nursing at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. In addition, she also provides individual and family psychotherapy at the ACORN Clinic in Brooker, FL, and serves as the College of Nursing representative to the University of Florida Area Health Education Center. 

Dr. Godbey graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Jacksonville, FL and received her BSN from the University of Florida. She went on to earn her MSN in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing from the University of Florida and her Ph.D. in Social Work/Sociology from Florida State University.

Dr. Godbey is a member of the Florida Nurses' Association Council of Specialists in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, 2nd Vice President, District 10 of the Florida Nurses' Association; member of the American Nurses' Association; and member of Sigma Theta Tau, Alpha Theta Chapter. Last year she was honored for support of nursing from the University of Utah College of Nursing Alumni Association.

Sandra E. F. Seymour, Ph.D. 

Dr. Seymour presently is Associate Professor, teaching advanced practice nursing, with the Department of Women's, Children's, & Family Nursing in the College of Nursing and is a Family Nurse Practitioner providing primary care advanced nursing at the UF Community Health Center at Eastside. In addition, she provides sexuality consultation for Clients with spinal cord injury at the Upreach Rehabilitation Pavilion, Gainesville, FL, and is a consultant for Family Nurse Practitioner grant at the College of Nursing, University of South Alabama, Mobile, AL. Dr. Seymour also serves as an expert witness for the Law Firm of Ackerman, Senterfitt, and Eidson in Tallahassee, FL.

Dr. Seymour earned her BSN in Nursing at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, her MN in Medical-Surgical Nursing at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, her Ph.D. in Social Work from Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, and her Family Nurse Practitioner status from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. 

Dr. Seymour is a member of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, the American Nurses' Association, the Florida Nurses' Association, and the Sigma Theta Tau, National Nursing Honorary Society.
