How to Use Clinical Musculoskeletal Pathology

Setting Up | Running the Program | Requirements | Web Updates

Setting Up

Clinical Musculoskeletal Pathology requires a modern computer system with a CD-ROM player and/or a connection to the Internet. Internet connectivity is required to use the online exercises and Web updates.

Required Software

Either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer are required to view Clinical Musculoskeletal Pathology. The program has not been tested with other browsers but should work in most circumstances.

Installing the Program from CD-ROM

Insert the Clinical Musculoskeletal Pathology CD-ROM, open it and double click on the "start" file. This will start your browser and begin the program.

Using the Program from the Internet

Connect to the Internet using Navigator or Explorer. Select "Open Location..." from the "File" menu. Type in the MSPATH address http:///cme/mspath/ and press ENTER.

Running the Program

Clinical Musculoskeletal Pathology is organized in a comprehensive outline of the subject matter. The highest level of the outline is the list of chapters, also referred to as the "Table of Contents" screen. You must select an item from this list to begin any session with Clinical Musculoskeletal Pathology. After selecting a topic you are presented with a "chapter" from the text. Throughout this page you will see highlighted words signifying the types of images that are available for the text you are currently reading. [Micro] and [X-Ray] are two examples. Clicking on these "hot text" areas will display the desired image on the right side of your browser window.

User Options

Frames or No Frames

The program is designed to display all text and images within a series of "frames" inside your browser's window. The text appears in the frame on the left. Images appear in the large frame on the right. The small frame in the upper right displays links to help you navigate. You may change the relative size of each frame by clicking on and dragging the dividers.

You have the option to use a "pop window" for images. You might wish to do this if your computer monitor is small - overlapping windows are sometimes better in that situation. Or you may prefer to arrange the screen differently to suit your own needs. To select this option, click on the "No Frames" link near the upper right. A second browser window will appear for the images. Otherwise the program will perform exactly the same as if you were using frames.

Once you have asked for an image you will have two windows open, one will contain your text, and the other will hold the images. You may resize and reposition this second window along side of your text window. Resizing the window is done by grabbing the bottom right hand corner of the window with your mouse and dragging the corner to the desired size (on the Macintosh grab the corner and drag, on the PC the curser will change to a double headed arrow). Windows may be moved by grabbing the title bar and dragging the window to the desired location, (as you move a window you will see a "ghost outline," when you let go of the mouse button the window itself will snap to the new location).

Changing Fonts Styles and Sizes

This is a function of the browser software and these changes may be made under the "options" or "preferences" menu within Navigator or Explorer.

Changing Backgrounds and Colors

Different background and text colors may be selected from the same menu as the fonts.
