This Southeastern Medical Informatics Meeting is an unique opportunity to meet and interact with other developers, engineers and clinicians working in the field of medical informatics from the South Eastern United States. The informal character of this meeting combined with the large number of interesting topics should give us ample opportunities for fruitful discussions. Personally, I'm exited about the meeting and look forward to meeting everyone and discuss common interest areas. Also, perhaps this meeting could be the start of a network of researchers in Medical Informatics in the southeast. - Jan J. van der Aa, PhD

Informatics is the medical growth industry related to the successful, efficient delivery of healthcare to our population. Without the past data, needless repetition occurs. Without access to existing knowledge, needless mistakes will occur. Without enjoyable education, the training of physicians becomes drudgery. Therefore I'm delighted to observe the outpouring of interest in what was planned as a very informal conference on medical informatics. My goal from the start was merely to allow people with common interests to discover and get to know each other. If the rush of abstract submissions is any guide, this will occur. The development of improved medical care will be the outcome. - Gordon L. Gibby, MD

Welcome to the first regional Medical Informatics conference held in Florida. Over the past decade the Southeast has emerged as a major locus of health care innovation and leadership. This conference was conceived as a forum to highlight our region's contribution to the field of Informatics. More importantly, the conference should provide an unique opportunity for individual researchers and developers to meet and exchange ideas. We are hopeful that this is only the first of many productive informatics meetings in the Southeast. - Richard Rathe, MD
