Using the UF Campus Spam Scanner with OSX

UF Computing and Network Services has recently added a 'spam score' to all email flowing to @ufl.edu addresses. You may scan for this information with a rule in Apple Mail or Entourage, and dispose of suspect messages as you see fit. (This service should complement any junk mail filter(s) you already have in place.) For more information go to:

New Rule

Here is an example configuration using Apple Mail:

  1. Select 'Preferences...' from the Mail menu.
  2. Click on the 'Rules' panel and then again on the 'Add Rule' button (figure 1 above).
  3. Give your rule a name.
  4. Click on the first pulldown menu in in the first rule (that lists 'To', 'From', and the like) and select 'Edit Header List...'.
  5. Add the 'X-Spam-Level' header as shown in figure 2 and click 'OK'.
Add Header
  1. Now set up your rule as shown in figure 3:
      X-Spam-Level Contains *****
Five or six stars make sense to start with; fewer stars mean more 'hits'.
  2. Set up one or more actions to suit your needs. In this example, all messages with a spam level of five or more stars will be moved to the trash. Moving spam to the 'Junk' mailbox is another obvious choice. There are several other options.
  3. Adding the last action 'Stop evaluating rules' tells the program to go on to the next message once spam is found.
