Theories on the origin of syphilis
- Perhaps another treponomal organism that does not cause a venereal disease (such as T. pallidum subsp. partenue, the organism that causes Yaws) arrived in Europe from Central Africa or the Americas, and subsequently mutated into a sexually transmitted disease in order to facilitate its survival in the colder, non-tropical climate.
