- 1880s - Economic Boom: cotton, citrus, phosphate. Major fires, freezes
- 1880s - First all-weather roads
- 1880s - Blacks predominant in city offices
- 1882 - Drs. Robert and Sarah Robb publish The Robb's Family Physicianin Chicago
- 1882 - The Drs. Robb arrive in Gainesville
- 1888 - Second yellow fever epidemic, 16 deaths
- 1889 - Election laws disenfranchise black voters; Jim Crow laws
- 1890s - First waterworks and electric plant, first telephones
- 1893 - Johns Hopkins University holds its first classes
- 1894 - Malaria recognized as mosquito-borne
- 1900 - Gainesville High School established
- 1900 - Open range livestock and turpentine production remain important
- 1910s - Sewer system, post office, paved streets, library in Gainesville
- 1914 - World War I begins; 1400 local men and women join military
- 1915 - Dr. W.C. Thomas graduates from Johns Hopkins
