• 1920s - Telephones become common; highway construction; influx of Tin Can Tourists
• 1920s - Segregated public facilities
• 1924 - Dr. W.C. Thomas, Sr. arrives from Georgia, begins practicing medicine
• 1926 - Dixie Hotel built at height of economic boom
• 1928 - Alachua County Hospital constructed, originally has 50 beds
• 1930s - Great Depression; payment in kind is common
• 1930 - Dr. W.C. Thomas elected chief of staff, Alachua County Hospital
• 1934 - First Ph.D. graduates from UF
• 1940 - Last trains on Main Street
• 1940s - World War II; Most young local physicians join military service
• 1950 - Dr. W.C. Thomas elected president of Florida OB/GYN Society
• 1950 - McCarthyism in Florida Senate
• 1956 - UF College of Medicine holds its first classes
• 1967 - Gainesville Veterans Administration Medical Center dedicated
• 1969 - Dr. Thomas delivers his last baby on Dec. 14, after nearly 8000
