1920s - Telephones become common; highway construction; influx of Tin Can Tourists
1920s - Segregated public facilities
1924 - Dr. W.C. Thomas, Sr. arrives from Georgia, begins practicing medicine
1926 - Dixie Hotel built at height of economic boom
1928 - Alachua County Hospital constructed, originally has 50 beds
1930s - Great Depression; payment in kind is common
1930 - Dr. W.C. Thomas elected chief of staff, Alachua County Hospital
1934 - First Ph.D. graduates from UF
1940 - Last trains on Main Street
1940s - World War II; Most young local physicians join military service
1950 - Dr. W.C. Thomas elected president of Florida OB/GYN Society
1950 - McCarthyism in Florida Senate
1956 - UF College of Medicine holds its first classes
1967 - Gainesville Veterans Administration Medical Center dedicated
1969 - Dr. Thomas delivers his last baby on Dec. 14, after nearly 8000
