Outstanding Issues for the UFBI Large Auditorium

Video Teleconferencing

The current plans call for a portable video teleconferencing console which could be moved from room-to-room as needed. The simplest design for this console would include two 21 to 27 inch monitors and a fixed high-quality camera with a directional microphone. The camera would be configured so that the instructor could have eye-to-eye interaction with a remote audience. Some sort of simple AV switching (for a document camera, etc.) would also be useful. Wiring will need to be provided for two-way audio and video in each of the rooms we intend to use this equipment, including the large classroom. The teleconferencing CODEC would be housed in the audiovisual control room.

Video Distribution/Cable Television

Our plans rely on the ability to move the audiovisual signals throughout the building. Part of this plan also includes the ability to "tune in" to live or pre recorded "channels" originating at various points in the building and possibly beyond. This is clearly beyond the scope of the large classroom RFP and will require a separate planning process.

Resolution of Projected Images

We've been having a very useful debate regarding the need for high resolution image projection. It's been my experience that this is a highly subjective area that deserves careful study. I would like to initiate at least one demonstration separate from the RFP process to include the actual instructors who will use the large classroom. The easiest way to arrange this would be to an existing multimedia classroom on main campus.

It is my opinion that there will not be a "right answer" to the resolution question. Instead, we will be faced by a series trade-offs which should be made explicit in the RFP. The current design has many constraints such as the following:
