Labs: Culture reveals gram positive bacteria that forms catalase positive mucoid colonies and are weakly acid-fast. Discussion: The diagnosis of cavitary pulmonary disease by Rhodococcus equi is made by clinical presentation and culture. Transmission of the disease is associated with horses.
