(BCC 7100 / ANS R 1)
For the 4-week version of this course, offered in the fall, we will cover everything noted below with added emphasis on anesthesia techniques and complications. First priority will be given to those interested in anesthesiology. Those entering a surgical specialty should also consider this clerkship. There will be more expected of the student and more interactive sessions. The two-week clerkship will focus on perioperative medicine as it applies to all physicians. During this course the student will learn the basics of airway management, mechanical ventilation, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, management of fluids, and use of vasoactive medications. In addition, the student will be taught concepts of preoperative evaluation, basic principles of anesthesia and management of acute postoperative complications.
