ANS E 2 - Clinical Elective - VA Operating Room and Pain Clinic

COURSE GOALS: This course will provide:
1. Introduction to physician care of pre- and post-surgical patients.
2. Students will participate in all aspects of pre-operative evaluation, peri- and post-operative management of patients of every age group.
3. Experience in diagnosis and management of cardiopulmonary, metabolic, and acid base, fluid balance and bleeding problems.
4. Introduction to the applied pharmacology of narcotics, sedatives, tranquilizers and local inhalation anesthetic agents.
5. Instruction of technical skills will include principles and practice of airway management with mask and tracheal intubation and initial exposure to epidural, spinal and other types of diagnostic and/or therapeutic nerve blocks.
6. Students will be expected to attend daily departmental conferences and seminars.
7. Students will be assigned to senior residents for operating room work and will have an opportunity for extensive contact with faculty, including a weekly seminar.
8. Students may participate in the Pain Clinic for a portion of a four-week elective. Interest will determine the amount of time spent in the Pain Clinic. Emphasis will be placed on the evaluation of patients and the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks for the relief of pain.
9. Students will be exposed to a broad concept for relief of pain, not only for the performance of surgery but also for chronic problems. This will include special techniques such as the use of thermo probes, Doppler flowmeters, and plethysmography, etc.

MEETING PLACE AND TIME: VA OR and Pain Clinic, 0700-1700 daily.
