Barium Swallow

Single film from a barium meal study demonstrating a normal stomach. The stomach can be identified with the lesser and greater curves seen quite clearly. This is a double-contrast examination which means that the patient has been given a substance to produce gas inside the stomach such that adequate coating of the stomach can be performed and the stomach distended. A large barium-filled fundus is identified.

On a normal barium swallow the esophagus should have a smooth outline. No persistently narrowed areas should be seen. Peristalsis can be observed on screening the patient. The whole examination can be recorded on video if necessary (video-swallow examination).
