Program Objectives

MODULE 1: GI -- The Long and Short of It

Identify symptoms, causes and diagnosis of small intestine bacterial
overgrowth in older adults
Recognize the symptoms, complications and treatment of GERD
Define, evaluate and treat constipation

MODULE 2: Getting Around -- Assistive Technology

Develop awareness of state-of-the-art assistive technologies
Discuss low-vision technology with patients
Advise older patients on reorganizing their homes to improve their safety and convenience

MODULE 3: Drugs and the Elderly

Identify potential adverse reactions to prescription drugs, OTC medications, vitamins/herbs, alcohol and tobacco
Modify behavior of patients with medication, alcohol and tobacco dependence
Utilize the Internet to locate sources of lower cost prescription drugs and senior drug programs

MODULE 4: The Neurology Connection

Identify the symptoms, diagnosis and current treatment of Parkinson's Disease
Define TIA, list risks of stroke, and identify work-up and treatment of TIAs
Recognize and categorize the different types of tremors and their underlying cause and treatment

MODULE 5: Losing It -- Physical Deficits of Aging

Identify symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of osteoarthritis
Recognize and treat postprandial hypotension
Identify symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism in older adults

MODULE 6: Moderated Patient Roundtable -- Care Expectations of Older Adults from Health Professionals

Moderated round table discussion with six older adults about their areas of satisfaction, dissatisfaction, expectations, and perceptions of health care and health care providers

Gain insight into older patients' perception of their health care
Provide more personalized care for your older patients
Use questionnaire to determine patient preferences
