Stacy Hodgson, RN
Restoring Aging and Sun-Damaged Skin

Ms. Hodgson is Clinical Coordinator of the Fresh Faces Cosmetic and Skin Care Center, Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, as well as the Plastic Surgery Coordinator for the Shands Operating Room. She also serves as a Surgical Nurse at Shands and is a Health Care Provider in the Department of Surgery, University of Florida.

Ms. Hodgson earned a BS in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1992 and a BSN in 1995 from the University of Florida.

She is a member of the American Society of Surgical Nursing, the Florida Nurse Association, and the Association of Operating Room Nurses.

Seung-jun (Sonny) O, MD
Facial Rejuvenation

Dr. O is Assistant Professor of the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Florida and Co-Medical Director of the University of Florida Aesthetic Center. He is licensed in the states of Florida and South Carolina and certified by the NBME and the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. O graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Biology in 1989 from the University of Mobile and earned his MD from the University of South Alabama in 1993.

Dr. O is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Alachua County Medical Society.

Valeria Gordan, DDS
Improving your Smile -- Aestetic Dentistry

Dr. Gordan is Assistant Professor at the Operative Dentistry Department at the University of Florida and is one of the Course Directors of the Advanced and Complex Restorations Course. She is responsible for formulating new lectures in Aesthetic Dentistry and responsible for creating lectures, and written and psychomotor examinations on state-of-the-art bonding procedures. Dr. Gordan is the School of Dentistry expert on Bleaching Treatment of Teeth and Bonding with Composite Resins. In addition, she treats patients in Faculty Practice, serves as a consultant with several publications and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Operative Dentistry Journal

Dr. Gordan attained her DDS in 1993 from the State University of Londrina, earned her M.S. and Certificate in Operative Dentistry from the University of Iowa in 1997 and was a Leadership Fellow with the American Dental Education Association in 2002.

Dr. Gordan is a Member of the College of Dentistry Committee on Student Affairs and the Committee on Student Admission and Recruitment. She is a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, the American Association of Dental Research-Florida Section, member of the American Dental Education Association, the American Association for Dental Research, and the International Association for Dental Research. Dr. Gordan was honored with the 2000-2001 School of Dentistry Teach of the Year Award.

C. Keith Ozaki, MD
Carotid Artery Stenosis

Dr. Ozaki is Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Florida, Staff Surgeon at the Gainesville, FL Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Attending Surgeon, Shands at the University of Florida. He also serves as Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Florida and Director of the University of Florida Surgical Resident Basic Science Course. He also serves as Peer Reviewer for Surgery and the Journal of Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Ozaki graduated magna cum laude in 1984 with a BA from Duke University and earned his MD from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1988. Dr. O was a Vascular Surgery Fellow at the University of Michigan Medical Center, and was the Conrad Jobst Vascular Research Fellow from 1995-1996, Vascular Surgery Research Fellow at Deaconess Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Fellow in the Combined Program in Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Massachusetts General Hospital and Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ozaki is licensed in the State of Florida, is certified in General Vascular Surgery by the American Board of surgery and is a Diplomat with the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Ozaki is a member of the North American Vascular Biology Organization, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Alachua County Medical Society, the Florida Medical Association, the Society for Veteran's Administration Surgeons, the American Heart Association Council on Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, the Florida Vascular Society. In addition, he is a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons and serves as an Examination Consultant with the American Board of Surgery.

Thomas Huber, MD, PhD
Aortic Aneurysms

Dr. Huber is Associate Professor of Surgery with the University of Florida, Attending Vascular Surgeon with the Shands Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida, and Attending Vascular Surgeon with the Gainesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He also serves on the Credentials Committee of Shands Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Huber received his BS in 1981 from the University of Illinois, his MD in 1985 from the University of Michigan Medical School, and his PhD in Physiology in 1993 from the University of Michigan. He served as a Surgical Research Fellow from 1988-1990, Vascular Research Fellow from 1992-1993, and Clinical Vascular Fellow from 1993-1994 at the University of Michigan Hospitals. He is certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor, is a Diplomat with the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons, and holds Special Certification in Vascular Surgery. He is licensed in the States of Florida and Michigan.

Dr. Huber is a Peer Reviewer with Surgery, JAMA and the Journal of Vascular Surgery, for which he received the award of Distinguished Reviewer in 2001. He is a member of the Alachua County Medical Society, the Florida Medical Association, the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society, the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, the American Association for Vascular Surgery, the Edward Woodward Surgical Society, and the Society for University Surgeons.

James M. Seeger, MD
Intermittent Claudication

Dr. Seeger is currently Professor and Chief, Division of Vascular Surgery, Associate Chairman, Department of Surgery, and Adjunct Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Florida. He also serves on the American Board of Surgery Vascular Surgery Board and Committee on Competence, as well as College of Medicine's Executive Fiscal Affairs Committee, and the Shands Hospital Operating Room Committee and Resource Allocation Committee. He is on the Editorial Board of several publications, including Year Book of Surgery, Southern Medical Journal, Vascular Surgery, Journal of Vascular Surgery and Contemporary Surgery.

Dr. Seeger graduated in 1969 with a BS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received his MD from the Medical College of Georgia in 1973. He served a Fellowship in Vascular Surgery, Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine from 1980-1981. He is Certified by the American Board of Surgery with special Qualifications in General Vascular Surgery.

Marc Heft, MD
Loss of Taste in Older Adults

Dr. Heft is Professor and Associate Chairman with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Diagnostic Sciences, and Professor with the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Florida, Graduate Studies Faculty with the Department of Clinical & Health Psychology, House Staff with the Hospital Dental Service at Shands Teaching Hospital, He is also a member of the University of Florida Brain Institute, Consultant with the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Research Consultant with the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), and Director of the Claude Denson Pepper Center for Research on Oral Health in Aging. Dr. Heft is also a Reviewer of Grants and Allocations for the American Fund for Dental Health and Journal Reviewer for numerous medical publications.

Dr. Heft graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BSEE in Electrical Engineering in 1970, earned his DMD in Dentistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974, and received an MA and PhD in Psychology from American University in 1981 and 1982, respectively. He is licensed in Florida and Maryland.

Dr. Heft is a member of the Task Force on Special Problems Related to Women and the Task force on Pain in the Elderly for the International Association for the Study of Pain. He is an Associate Member of both the Center for Gerontological Studies and the Center for Neurobiological Sciences. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Dental Schools/American Dental Education Association, The Amlerican Pain Society, the International Association for Dental Research/American Association for Dental Research, and a Fellow with the Gerontological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Gayle Woodson, MD
Sense of Smell in the Elderly

Dr. Woodson is currently Professor with the Department of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery and Graduate Faculty with the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Florida. She serves as a Consultant and Panel Member for the Food and Drug Administration, ENT Devices Panel, She has editorial responsibilities for Head & Neck Surgery, Journal of the Voice, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, Laryngoscope, Joural Club Journal, and Auris, Nasus, Larynx.

Dr. Woodson earned her BA in Biology and Psychology from Rice University in 1972 and her MD from Baylor College of Medicine in 1975. She served a Fellowship in Otolaryngology at Baylor College of Medicine in 1976 and a Fellowship in Laryngology at the Institute of Laryngology and Otology, London, England. She is licensed in the states of Texas, California, Tennessee and Florida, and is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Woodson is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Medical Women's Association, the American Medical Association, the Society of Head and Neck Oncologists of Great Britain, the Royal College of Surgeons, the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Head and Neck Surgery, the American Physiological Society, the Association of Women Surgeons, the American Laryngological, Rhinological & Otological Society. She is an Ad Hoc Reviewer for the Veterans Administration Merit Review Board. Dr. Woodson serves on the Committee on Medical Motion Pictures for the American College of Surgeons.

Edward Valenstein, MD
Peripheral Neuropathy

Dr. Valenstein is Professor of Neurology and Clinical & Health Psychology and Interim Chair of the Department of Neurology, University of Florida. He is also Director of the Movement Disorders Clinic, an Electromyographer with Shands Teaching Hospital, serves as Clinical Staff for the Department of Neurology, University of Florida, and is a Consulting Neurologist for the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial. He is a member of the UF Shands Cancer Center Internal Advisory Committee, the Travel Policy Committee of the Faculty Group Practice, The Institutional Committee for Graduate Medical Education, the Medicare Compliance Committee and the Harrell Center Advisory Committee.

Dr. Valenstein graduated cum laude with his BA in 1965 from Harvard College and earned his MD in 1967 from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Neurology and with added Qualifications in Clinical Neurophysiology, and is licensed in the states of Massachusetts and Florida.

Dr. Valenstein is a Member of the American Medical Association, the Florida Medical Association, the Florida Society of Neurology, the International Neuropsychological Society, the University of Florida Center for Neuropsychological Sciences, the University of Florida Center for Neurobiological Studies, the University of Florida Brain Institute, and is a Fellow with the American Academy of Neurology.

Ricardo Gonzalez-Rothi, MD
COPD

Dr. Gonzalez-Rothi is currently Professor of Medicine and Professor of Pharmaceutics at the University of Florida, Staff Physician at the Gainesville VA Medical Center, Chief of the Pulmonary Section at the VA Medical Center, and Director of Respiratory Therapy and Director of the Pulmonary Clinic at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center. He is the Gainesville Veteran's Administration Medical Center Chairperson of the Professional Standards Board for Respiratory Therapy, and is the National Spokesperson for Diverse Populations for the American Lung Association in Florida.

Dr. Gonzalez-Rothi received his BA in Biology in 1973 from Cornell University and his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1977. He served a Fellowship at the University of Florida Shands Teaching Hospital from 1980 - 1982. He served a Fellowship at the University of Florida Shands Teaching Hospital from 1980-1982. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine Pulmonary Subspecialty, Diplomate National Board of Medical Examiners, Diplomate with the State of Florida Board of Medical Examiners, and Diplomate with the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Gonzalez-Rothi is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the Florida Thoracic Society, the Florida Medical Association and the National Coalition for the Elimination of Tuberculosis. He serves on the Shands Teaching Hospital Medical Error Think Tank Task Force, is a member of the Medical Alumni Board of Directors for the University of Florida College of Medicine, is a consultant for the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, He also serves in the Alachua County Medical Society "We Care" Program to serve medically underserved in the community.

Eloise Harman, MD
Asthma in the Elderly

Dr. Harman is Professor of Medicine with the Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine and Chief of the Critical Care Services at the University of Florida and serves as the Medical Director of the Cardiopulmonary Technology Program at Santa Fe Community College, Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit and Director of Outpatient Respiratory Therapy at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, and Director of the UF/Shands/VA ACLS Training Center. In addition, she serves on many committees, including Chairperson of the Student Advocacy Committee, and MICU/CCU Committee, and member of the Shands Hospital Medical Re ord Committee and the Hospital Ethics Committee. Dr. Harman is also Faculity Advisor for Preprofessional Service Organization (PSO) and President of the Florida Foundation for Advancement of Medical Research.

Dr. Harman earned her BS in Chemistry in 1967 from Brooklyn College and her MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1970. She was a Pulmonary Fellow with the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center from 1973-1974. She holds Board Certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine (1973), Subspecialty in Pulmonary Disease (1976) and Subspecialty in Critical Care Medicine (1987, 1997).

Dr. Harman is a BLS instructor, ACLS Instructor and ACLS Affiliate Faculty of the Florida Heart Association and is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the Florida Thoracic Society, the Alachua County Medical Society, the American Medical Women's Association and the American College of Chest Physicians. She received the CHEST Foundation Covernors Community Service Award in 2001.

Michael Jantz, MD
Lung Cancer in Older Adults

Dr. Jantz is Assistant Professor of Medicine and Associate Program Director for Fellowship Training with the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Florida. He also sits on the MICU Resource Utilization Committee of Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, and serves as a Peer Reviewer for Chest and Respiratory Care.

Dr. Jantz graduated from Willamette University with a BS in Chemistry in 1985 and received his MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1989. He served a Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1996-1999 and is Board Certified by the ABIM Subspecialty Boards in Critical Care Medicine (1999) and Pulmonary Medicine (1998), by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1992, and by the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1990. He is licensed in the states of Florida, South Carolina and Washington.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, a member of the American Thoracic Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American College of Pysicians, and the American Medical Association.

Module 5: "Talk to Me" -- Communication with Older Adults
Patricia Kricos, PhD
Preventing Communicative Disorders in Older Adults

Dr. Kricos is Professor with the Department of Communication, Director of the Joint Audiology Program, Interim Director, Center for Gerontological Studies, and Interim Associate Director for Education with the Institute on Aging, University of Florida. She also serves as a reviewer for several professional publications.

Dr. Kricos earned her BA in Speech Pathology in 1970 from the University of Texas at El Paso, and from The Ohio State University he earned her MA in Speech/Healing Science in 1971 and her PhD in 1973. She holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Dr. Kricos is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf, the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology, the Florida Language Speech and Hearing Association, the American Academy of Audiology and the National Association of Future Doctors of Audiology.

Michael Marsiske, PhD
Cognitive Interventions

Dr. Marsiske is Associate Director for Research, with the Institute on Aging and Associate Professor with the Departments of Health Policy and Epidemiology, and Clinical and Health Psychology, and is Joint Faculty with the Department of Psychology, University of Florida. He also serves as Chair of the Graduate Recruitment and Training Committee for the Institute on Aging at the University of Florida and is a member of the Graduate Recruitment Committee, Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University

Dr. Marsiske earned his PhD in 1992 and MS in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and his B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Toronto in 1987. In addition, he served a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Center for Psychology and Human Development at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education from 1992-1995.

Dr. Marsiske is a member of the American Psychological Society, the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development, the Gerontological Society of America and the American Psychological Association and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for several psychology and gerontology journals.

Ann Horgas, PhD
Assessing and Treating Pain in Dementia Patients

Dr. Horgas is Associate Professor with the College of Nursing and the Institute of Aging at the University of Florida and presently serves as a Grant Reviewer for the Alzheimer's Association Grants Program and for the American Nurses Foundation and reviewer of several psychological and gerontological publications, including The Gerontologist, Nursing Research, Journal of Gerontology, and Psychology and Aging. Dr. Horgas also sits on numerous committees within the University, as well as serving as Chair or Member on many graduate student Doctoral, Master's and Baccalaureate Degree committees.

Dr. Horgas attained her BS in 1980 and MS in 1987 in Nursing and her PhD in Human Development and Family Studies in 1992 from The Pennsylvania State University. In 1995, she also completed a 4-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Psychological Gerontology with the Free University of Berlin.

Dr. Horgas is a member of the Florida Nurses' Association, the American Society of Pain Management Nurses, the Southern Nursing Research Society, the Gerontological Society of America, The American Nurses' Association, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.

Daniel G. Maico, MD
Living with Prostate Cancer -- A Doctor's Perspective

Dr. Maico is presently in the Private Practice of Gastroenterology and is affiliated with the North Florida Regional Medical Center and Alachua General Hospital. He is Head of the Emergency Room Committee and serves on the Physicians Activities Committee and the Tissue Committee of the North Florida Regional Medical Center, the Tissue Committee of Alachua General Hospital, and is a member of the Veteran's Administration Medical Center Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and the Committee on Hospital Infections.

Dr. Maico received his BS in 1970 from the University of Georgia and his MD from the Medical College of Georgia in 1974. He is licensed in the State of Florida and is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and Board Certified in Gastroenterology. He served a Fellowship with the University of Florida Department of Medicine, Department of Gastroenterology from in 1979-1980 and as Fellowship Instructor from 1980-1981.

Dr. Maico is a Board Member and Immediate First-Past President of the Alachua Count Medical Society. Dr. Maico also serves on the Board of Directors of Hospice of North Central Florida and the Acorn Clinic.

David Lowenthal , MD
Surviving Massive Stroke -- A Doctor's Perspective

Dr. Lowenthal is Professor of Medicine, Professor of Pharmacology, and Professor of Exercise Science at the University of Florida College of Medicine and Director of the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center, at the Gainesville Veteran's Administration Center. He is also Director of the Hypertension Clinic and Clinic Director of the Hypertension Center at the University of Florida/VA Medical Center, as well as Medical Director of the Living Well Program with the College of Health and Human Performance; Director of the Geriatric Fellowship at the University of Florida/VA Medical Center; Visiting Professor, Gerontology and Geriatrics Institute, University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy; and Dozer Visiting Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva, Israel.

Dr. Lowenthal received his BA Degree in Biology in 1962 from Temple University, and earned his MD in 1966 from the Temple University School of Medicine. In addition, he holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology from Temple University (1986). Dr. Lowenthal served as a Fellow in Clinical Pharmacology at Temple University School of Medicine from 1967 to 1968, was a Fellow in Nephrology from 1970-1971 at Temple University Health Sciences Center, and Fellow in Nephrology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 1971-1972 . He is currently licensed in Pennsylvania, New York, and Florida.

Dr. Lowenthal is a Fellow with the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the High Blood Pressure Council of the American Heart Association.He is a member of the American Federation for Clinical Research, American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, American Society of Nephrology, International Society of Nephrology, American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, International Society of Hypertension, American Medical Athletic Association, American Academy of Sports Physicians, American College of Sports Medicine, American Geriatrics Society, Florida Geriatrics Society, and the Gerontological Society of America. Dr. Lowenthal also serves on numerous international, national, and institutional committees.

Richard C. Reynolds, MD
On the Other Side -- When Doctors Become Patients

Dr. Reynolds is Courtesy Professor with the University of Florida College of Medicine. Until his retirement, he served from 1987-1996 as Executive Vice President of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, was Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at UMDNJ from 1984-1987 and was Dean of the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (formerly Rutgers Medical School), from 1978-1987. Among his many other publications, Dr. Reynolds is co-author of the book, "On Doctoring," which is provided to first-year medical students in the US by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Dr. Reynolds graduated in 1949 with a B.Sc. in Biology from Rutgers University and earned his MD in 1953 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Reynolds is a member of the American Medical Association, the New Jersey Health Science Group, the American Board of Internal Medicine, the New Jersey Academy of Medicine, Board of Trustees of the Middlesex County Medical Society, and a Fellow with the American College of Physicians.
