Strength in the Elderly -- Benefits
For example:
- By about age 50, most healthy people have lost about 20% of their skeletal muscle mass they had at age 30.
- After age 60, this decline becomes quite apparent, as measured by actual strength loss.
- That is, there is typically a 30% loss in strength between ages 50 and 70. There is another 15% drop by age 80. And there is a further, more precipitous loss, thereafter.
- Moreover, this decrease in muscle mass and strength is accompanied by the stiffening of ligaments and tendons resulting in loss of flexibility.
