Sleep Patterns of Older Adults - Stages of Sleep
- A separate stage characterized by rapid eye movements is called REM sleep.
- Most dreaming occurs during REM sleep during which there's loss of muscle tone as if the sleeper were paralyzed watching his own dream and prevented from acting it out.
- Sleep occurs in about 90 minute repeating cycles going from light to deep, to lighter stages and then REM sleep.
