Sleep Patterns of Older Adults - Stages of Sleep
- Nocturnal awakenings increase in frequency and duration. This may be due to mild internal and external discomforts, but most elderly people awaken for no apparent reason.
- Because of frequent and longer nighttime awakenings, total time spent asleep is shorter in older persons.
- There's a tendency to nap during the day so that total time spent asleep is redistributed in a 24-hour cycle.
