Palpation of the breast starts at the nipple and extends outward in a radial or spoke-like pattern. The entire breast needs to be examined.

• It is important to feel the axillary tail of the breast that extends into the armpit from the upper outer quadrant of the breast.
  
  
• The nipple and areola complex should be examined with assessment for nipple discharge
