Screening the Elderly for Colorectal Cancer -- Risk Factors

Up until the release of surprising data from the Nurses' Health Study in January of 1999, the prevailing assumption was that we should therefore promote a low-fat, high-fiber diet as a protective factor against colorectal cancer.

But in 16 years of follow-up on 89,000 nurses, no evidence of a significant protective effect of dietary fiber against the development of colorectal adenomas or cancer was found.
