Periodic flexible sigmoidoscopy has become the standard of care in routine screening of asymptomatic average-risk patients over the age of 50 for colorectal cancer.
This is by far the most heavily disputed recommendation for colorectal cancer screening.
The ability of flexible sigmoidoscopy to detect colorectal adenomas and malignancy is limited to the distal 60 cm of the colon (the length of the sigmoidoscope).
