Screening the Elderly for Colorectal Cancer -- Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

As part of the Primary Prevention Trial by the National Cancer Institute, a randomized, controlled trial is currently under way to determine the efficacy of periodic flexible sigmoidoscopy as a means of screening for colorectal cancer.

Results on mortality will not be available until the year 2008.

Current recommendations for an average-risk patient are to undergo flexible sigmoidoscopy every three to five years starting at age 50, along with an annual FOBT (Table 3).
