Screening the Elderly for Colorectal Cancer -- Double-Contrast Barium Enema (DCBE)

In one study comparing DCBE plus flexible sigmoidoscopy with colonoscopy for the evaluation of GI bleeding suspected to originate from the colon, there was no difference in the ability to detect polyps greater than 9 mm in diameter.

The risk of colonic perforation during DCBE has been estimated to be less than 1 in 5,000.
