Recognizing Skin Cancer in Older Adults -- Squamous Cell Carcinoma

The second tumor that we need to discuss is squamous cell carcinoma.

This accounts for about 15% of all the skin cancers, and it too is found on sun-exposed areas -- the face, ears, arms and hands.

It's important to remember that squamous cell carcinoma can arise "de novo," that is, arise on a normal appearing skin, or it can come from actininic keratosis.

It is felt that those that arise from actininic keratoses are probably not as malignant in their biologic behavior as those that arise "de novo."
