Other variables that may lead to a poor prognosis are

• tumor ulceration
  
• high mitotic rate
  
• lack of melanin pigmentation, which indicates poor tumor differentiation -- these are the so-called "A Melanotic" malignant melanomas, and
  
• malignant melanoma on the trunk of males.
  
  • They do much more poorly than melanomas on the legs of females.
