Case 3
88-year old Addie Burrows lives in a nursing home and suffers from Alzheimer's disease. One evening she becomes considerably more confused and develops new onset urinary incontinence. Her temperature is 100 degrees F., lungs are clear, and her abdomen is unremarkable. A urinalysis shows 58 wbc's, 6 rbc's and is positive for leukocyte estrase.
The urine culture shows E. Coli sensitive to ciprofloxacin. She is then started on the ciprofloxacin and improves considerably over the next 3 days.
