In recent times the use of a quick serum Troponin I in the emergency department can provide some notion as to whether or not the patient has had a myocardial infarction in the distant, i.e., 10 days or near past i.e., 10 hours.
However, a negative Troponin I does not eliminate the possibility of infarction if the test is done early after the onset of chest discomfort, e.g., 1-2 hours.
