The fourth question is what is the etiology of the stroke?
If the patient is elderly, otherwise healthy, and has risk factors for vascular disease or potentially emboligenic cardiac disease, it can usually be assumed, at least in the acute situation, that the stroke reflects embolism related to these processes.
Knowing the etiology of the stroke is essential to taking the right steps to reduce the probability of stroke recurrence.
It is also important to our decision regarding the second treatment issue, administration of thrombolytic treatment, specifically recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (or rTPA).
