Ischemic stroke is defined as the sudden onset of a focal neurological deficit because of a vascular event.

Until quite recently, the treatment of stroke was limited to two domains:

• the primary prevention of stroke through the control of risk factors, and
  
  
• the prevention of stroke recurrence through direct intervention in the vascular pathophysiology.
