Emergency Response to Stroke -- Treatment Issues

Comparison of this study with other studies of thrombolytic therapy in stroke yields one further conclusion: rTPA must be administered within 3 hours of stroke onset.

Greater delays are associated with enhanced risk, due to increased probability of rupture of necrotic blood vessels.

Greater delays are also associated with reduced benefit, due to reduced volume of neural tissue that can still be rescued by opening up the occluded blood vessel.
