Fever and Infection in the Elderly -- UTIs

If you identify a gram negative organism, third generation cephalosporins, broad spectrum penicillins with a Beta-lactamase inhibitor, TMP/SMX or quinolone may be indicated.

If gram positive infections are identified, consider possible infection with Enterococcus or Staphylococcus and consider treatment with vancomycin.
