Fever and Infection in the Elderly -- Infective Endocarditis
Infective Endocarditis is most frequently seen in the elderly, with over one-half of patients with endocarditis being of the age of 60 years of age or greater. This is due to the presence of
- surgically implanted valves,
- prostetic material,
- use of intravascular devices, and
- longer survival of patients with underlying cardiac valve diseases
