It is important to remember that although we typically associate fever with infection, oftentimes the elderly will have serious infections in the absence of documented fever or elevated white blood cell count.

Over the next few minutes, we will look into reasons for difficulty diagnosing the cause of infection in this population, the common causes of infection, and therapeutic issues in treating infections in the elderly.
