Fever and Infection in the Elderly -- Special Problems
Many studies have shown that the mortality for specific infections is higher in the elderly:
- There is a 3X increased death rate with pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis and endocarditis
- a 2-8X increased death rate with cholecystitis
- a 5-10X increased death rate with kidney infection and
- a 15-20X increased death rate with appendicitis
