Pneumococcus causes 40,000 deaths per year in the United States and is the most common bacterial cause of pneumonia in adults.

As for who should receive the pneumococcal vaccine, the recommendations are, in general, very similar to those for influenza vaccine:

All patients over 65 should receive the pneumococcal vaccine as well as patients under 65 with cardiac or pulmonary disease, diabetes, or immunosuppression.
