Treatment consists of anti-viral agents that inhibit viral DNA preliminaries. The three approved agents for this are

• acyclovir, or Zovirax, given 800 mg 5x a day while awake
  
  
• valacyclovir, or Valtrex, given as 1 gm every 8 hours while awake or
  
  
• Famciclovir, otherwise known as Famvir, given as 500 mg 3x a day while awake.
  
  Duration of therapy is generally 7-10 days.
