Diagnosis is usually based on a classic clinical presentation.

The diagnosis can be confirmed by several laboratory tests. These include

• a Tzank smear
  
  
• culture or antigen testing of the vesicular fluid
  
  
• a biopsy of the rash and
  
  
• more recently, genetic testing using PCR has been evaluated.
