These infections, while they may begin primarily in the hospital, hospitalized patients have been carried into nursing homes and, in a similar situation or similar scenario with that of MRSA, vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections appear to now have a reservoir within nursing homes.
And, a similar policy of keeping patients who are carriers of vancomycin-resistant enterococci out of nursing homes coming from teaching hospitals has also been instituted in many nursing homes.
