Another example is the presence of intra-abdominal infection. The elderly patient may have minimal to no abdominal pain.

On examination an elderly patient may not show the board-like rigidity that one associates with peritonitis in a younger population.

While these are uncommon infections, one needs to consider all these infections in any elderly patient showing these general symptoms of infection that I alluded to.
