Controlling Infectious Disease -- Enterococcal Infections

In the not-too-distant past we had been able to treat most enterococcal infections with ampicillin or an aminoglycoside and, as we began to see more and more ampicillin-resistant bacteria, we began to use vancomycin for the treatment of these infections.

However, within the last five years there has been an epidemic of vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections within the United States.
