Grief and mourning commonly involve a complex of reactions which blend into and replace one another, beginning with that initial shock and numbness, then sorrow and an aching or longing for the deceased, often followed by a period of disorganization and despair before the person moves on toward the recovery phase.
Each of these phases has its own characteristics and there are considerable differences from one person to another in both the duration and the form that each takes.
