Loss of Independence in the Elderly -- Independence and Dependence

Dependence may be transient or permanent, and this is dictated by the nature of the physical impairment or mental incapacitation of the individual

We need to keep in mind that to be dependent does not necessarily mean to lose autonomy

Dependency as a relationship, always implies inequality between the person who is dependent and the caretaker, and is characterized by the loss of control and personal freedom of the dependent person
