In the psychological arena there is a high incidence of dementia, depression and suicide in old age
- Depression is associated with a decline in physical and mental abilities, and with the losses that accompany the changes of aging. A decline in mental health and cognitive functions are major contributors to the loss of independence among the elderly
- The gradual decline in the physical, social, and psychological areas, contribute to diminished physical and mental functioning, which in turn may lead to disability and dependency upon family members, or institutions
