Cross Culture: Treating Your Elderly African American Patients

The elderly are always addressed as Mr. or Mrs., though many of them had other titles such as Mother Smith or Mother of the Church from their church affiliation.

And a lot of families acquired such names as Big Mamma or Big Daddy. This did not necessarily mean that they were blood relatives, but this was an acceptable way to show respect and a very important connection to an elder.
