Most rural white elderly were born and raised in farm communities, were landowners who lived through the Great Depression, and fought and supported World Wars.

Being a landowner did not mean wealth, but rather sometimes struggling for mere existence on a small piece of land. These small "one-horse and two-horse" farms required owners who were self-sufficient and who developed a strong work ethic.
