UF Campus and Gainesville Latino Links

The purpose of the “HAMSA Handbook” is an effort to catalogue much of information that has been collected in previous years regarding the HAMSA at UF COM as well as the Hispanic/Latino community of Gainesville. Please send us you recommendations, updates, or any new information.

HOLA Listserve-
This is our primary way of communication, it is updated at the start of each new year and actively used to communication news, events, thoughts, ideas, and whatever else is important to HAMSA and its members.

1st Year Orientation Organization Fair-
Done during the orientation week for first year medical students. Answer questions and talk about the goals of HAMSA. We collected names and emails of the interested 1st years and updated the HOLA list serve.

Hispanic Student Assembly (HSA)-
A terrific opportunity to interact and present HAMSA to undergrads. The event is put on by ‘La Casita’ and there are other graduate programs present. We appear with the HAMSA poster and collected names and emails. Our conversations with students were mainly about getting into medical school, but the idea was to show the undergraduate population an example of Latino students doing medicine, provide guidance, encouragement, and support. We collected almost 50 names at this event and it was clear that there is a dire need for a Hispanic medical student organization.

Hispanic Graduate Student Association (HGSA)-
This is the umbrella organization begun in 1998 for Hispanic Graduate students. They have a great list serve that the president of HAMSA should be on at least to forward interesting events to the HOLA list serve.

Hispanic Dental Student Association (HDSA)-
This is our counterpart organization at the College of Dentistry. We are collaborating with them through the Gainesville Latino Health Fair community project as well as socials and fundraising.

Hispanic Heritage Month in Gainesville-
This event takes place between September 15th and October 15th each year. The Hispanic Student Government Association usually publishes a schedule of events happening around campus. In the past, Shands Hospital put on a display of Latin music in the Atrium, as well as Latin food in the cafeteria. They sold “Como se siente” shirts and there was Latino poetry and art on display.

Downtown Latino-
This event coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month and took place in Downtown Gainesville on the center stage. The event was put on by the Chamber of Hispanic Affairs. There was Latin food and displays as well as live outdoor music- Latin Jazz, Salsa, etc. Turnout is great and HAMSA should definitely have a ‘booth’ at this event on topics such as health promotion and health educaiton. This ‘booth’ could be done in collaboration with the Hispanic Dental Society and even the Spanish Law Student Organization.
