Named for physician and humanitarian Dr. Leighton E. Cluff, the Undergraduate Humanities and Narrative Medicine Club is a great opportunity to interact with fellow premedical students, medical students, and physicians. If you are interested in leadership positions and are interested in the humane aspects of medicine, understanding cultural issues in healthcare, and in fostering the physician-patient relationship…

Come check us out!

We are a new club for undergraduates interested in the humane aspects of medicine, medical training, and in fostering the physician-patient relationship. The rigors of medical school selection and scientific medical training encourage premedical and medical students to focus on test taking, memorization, and scientific knowledge, and not necessarily to address questions pertaining to the art of health care. In particular, modern medical training tends not to address fully the importance of patient relationships and the emotional and mental skills needed to interact with patients. Premedical students thus can enter medical school with a set of skills and a body of knowledge that may have little to do with actual care of patients. This club will introduce premedical students to issues that they will confront as physicians but will not necessarily encounter in any formal fashion. There will be opportunities for informal meetings as well as formal meetings and discussions based on topical readings.

We have had well known speakers like Tod Chambers, Ph.D. and Rita Charon, M.D.,Ph.D. at our meetings and will have other speakers from the College of Medicine in the future.

The Undergraduate Humanities and Narrative Medicine Club is affiliated with the University of Florida’s College of Medicine and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
