4th Year Elective Information:
*    80 hours of community service are required in order to receive one month
off of your 4th year
*    15 of your hours must be performed in the 4th year (early so as to get the
hours done in time to receive your free month)
*    40 hours is the maximum you can receive for doing service outside of
Alachua County
*    At least 40 of your service hours must be done in Alachua County
*    For any trip outside of Alachua County, you can receive a maximum of 20
hours (this includes spring break mission trips)

Your hours must be logged on a scantron that is available in the Medical
Education Office. Your forms must be signed by a person in charge of the
site for which you are volunteering (not a student). The completed forms are
to be placed in a marked box in the Medical Education Office. Some
activities are preapproved (you will see the list on the volunteer hours
scantron).
In order to get credit for a service project that has not be preapproved,
your activity must get approval from a committee. To get approval, forward
the details of your volunteerism to Gina Gugluizza (ginag@ufl.edu). Approval
is often based on how involved and in contact with the people of need you
actually are.
The credit received for Community Service does not interfere with credit
from Elective Courses (in other words, if you do both, you can get time off
in 4th year for both). The goal is to encourage us to work in Alachua County
where there is great need already in places such as Helping Hands Clinic,
Equal Access, St Francis House, Peaceful Paths, Habitat, etc.

Helping Hands Clinic

There is a sign up sheet for volunteering at the Helping Hands Clinic on Monday evenings in the MDL. They could really use our help. The hours are typically from 4:30 - 7:00pm, but could run a little later or earlier.

It is at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Gainesville. Directions: Go east on University Ave, take a left on Main St, right on 4th Ave and go one block. It is a great experience, the volunteers are wonderful, and the patients are fun and colorful (often homeless) folks. Please sign up and make a difference!

Important message for volunteers: please remember to bring a community service form along with you in order to log your hours. They can be found in the MedEd office and dropped off there, too.
