Internship 101

Message from Dr. Duff:

January 30, 2009

Dear Seniors:

Please see the attachment to this message which provides a detailed schedule for Internship 101. Over the last two years, I have drastically revised this course, and I think you will be pleased with this quality of the presentations and the instruction. Please remember that the key goal of this course is to get you ready to “hit the ground running” on the first day of residency. In particular, the goal is to make sure that everyone feels comfortable with the initial management of acutely ill patients, such as you may encounter on one of your first nights on call on a busy medical, surgical, pediatric, or emergency medicine service. To that end, the ACLS course is much more intensive than in years past. The course now includes much more “practice” and practical experience than in previous years. Successful completion of the ACLS portion of the course will require detailed knowledge of the training manual, which is published by the American Heart Association – “Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support: Professional (Provider Manual).” Please order this manual on line now and begin to read it slowly and carefully prior to late April.

Please remember that I previously informed you that everyone needed to plan to be present for a full day, every day, for the 10 days of the course. As you will see when you review the schedule, there are days when we will be in class together until 5 pm. On other days, we will finish by noon to 1 pm. The schedule is very complicated, so please do not ask to change groups.

I will offer a special certification course in Neonatal Advanced Life Support for those of you pursuing residency training in Pediatrics. You do not have to receive this training here; some programs may expect you to cycle through their training program. However, if you wish to take the course I am presenting, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can order the requisite number of training manuals.
